Director Guy Ritchie managed to turn the stuffy stories of Sherlock Holmes into something chic, sexy, witty and oh-so-alluring. Did he manage to do it a second time? Oh, yes!
Holmes, his side-kick, Watson and Mycroft Holmes (Sherlock's brother) delve into the death of the Crown Prince of Austria. Along the way, they encounter a most formidable opponent: Professor Moriarty. What’s more, the Prof is intellectually Sherlock’s equal! How are they to outwit a fellow genius?

Midnight in Paris
Ooh goodie, this one pulls at my heart strings! The tagline of this movie says Paris after midnight is magic – and that is exactly what you get. Hollywood screenwriter, Gil, is spending his holiday in the city, hoping to find inspiration to write.
He gets more than inspiration; he gets magic that transports him back to the 1920s! He mingles with writers such as Ernest Hemingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald and artists like artists Salvador Dali, Man Ray and Pablo Picasso. And it really feels as if you are spending time with these historical figures. Charming stuff, this movie!

I Don’t Know How She Does It
Many women will be able to empathise with Sarah Jessica Parker’s character, Kate Reddy. She is a fierce career woman, a passionate wife and a loving mother who always wants to be there for her children.
This movie excels because even though its message is serious, it finds a humorous and heart-warming way to tell it. And we personally loved to see the motherly side of SJP. Added to that is the dashing British accent of Pierce Bronson, so this movie definitely makes for a perfect girls night out. Just what the holiday period ordered!

The Ides of March
Oh my word, Ryan Gosling and George Clooney - in one movie! I expected cameras to melt from the hotness overdose, but I was rewarded with superb performances. It is so refreshing to watch a movie that does not rely on special effects and 3D, but good, old fashioned acting. Ahh!
Stephen Meyers (Gosling) is a press secretary for Mike Morris’ (Clooney) political campaign. As seems to be the nature of politics, things get dirty and ugly, and it challenges Meyer’s idealistic notions. Though by no means entirely original, the riveting performances will make you forget you have popcorn to munch on.

The Adventures of Tintin
Steven Spielberg certainly has that magic touch with movies – give him any idea and he turns it into a master piece that will be watched for generations to come. This, I know – I watched E.T again the other day and it still left me astounded after all these years.
Back to 2011, and the Adventures of Tintin encompasses escapades through cobbled European streets, deserts and old worldly ships. As a reporter, Tintin and his trusty sidekick, the white dog Snowy, get the truth no matter what. And Snowy more often than not steals the show. If you have to see one movie before the year is up, this is it!

Hoofmeisie
If you enjoyed flicks like Mean Girls and Clueless, you will probably enjoy this.
Hoofmeisie is a funny look into the pursuit of the Head Girl position at a primary school. Nadia van Heerden is one of the main girls coveting it and believe you me, these little darlings transform into most vile, ambitious monsters.
Take your daughter, little sister, cousin or niece to watch it. No doubt good lessons can be learnt, and the South African humour much enjoyed. Oh and there are English subtitles too! Bonus!

Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol
I could not wait for the latest and fourth installment of Mission Impossible and quite happily, I was not fully disappointed.
Okay, so the story isn't most innovative, but I reckon that the adrenaline pumping action scenes more than make up for this. Take the one featuring 49-year-old Tom Cruise scaling Dubai’s Burj Khalifa - the tallest building in the world! That will go down as one of the most heart stopping movie scenes of all time, especially since Cruise did not use a stunt double. Kudos!

Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked
I remember these helium voiced critters from back in the day when they were on telly, before they became big at the movies. I found them to be charming and adorably mischievous. Forward onto 2011, and their voices make me involuntarily grind my teeth, their jokes are incredibly abysmal and I am at a loss as to how their previous two movies were such successes.
Keeping in with their downright bratty behaviour, the Chipmunks and Chipettes get ‘chipwrecked’ on a deserted island, instead of enjoying their ‘cruisechip’ holiday. It sets off a series of events that only kids under the age of 8 will find entertaining. And if I have to use the word ‘chip’ in this context one more time, I will hurl.

Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark
Old, spooky mansion aptly called Blackwood Manor: check. Raspy voices coming out of nowhere: check. Family with a young child in peril: check. But you know what? This horror flick actually works!
It takes you back to when you were a child and scared of that ‘haunted’ house in the neighbourhood. I think it is successful thanks to Guillermo del Toro's (Pan’s Labyrinth) brilliant touch. Oh, I almost forgot to tell you about the original owner of the mansion – he met a most terrible end: check!

I was sold on Ryan Gosling after I watched The Notebook. Knowing he acts in this flick, it is an instant must-see for me, even though it seems more action than romance.

New Year's Eve
It may feature a long list of top Hollywood stars including Robert De Niro, Michelle Pfeiffer, Hilary Swank, Ashton Kutcher and Halle Berry but this follow-up to director Garry Marshall's all-star hit Valentine's Day is far too similar to its predecessor.
The movie explores themes such as love, hope, forgiveness, second chances and fresh starts set in the bustling hub that is NYC. It touches on a number of characters whose intertwining stories deal with the triumphs and struggles of their lives as they get ready for the most dazzling night of the year. But dazzling this movie is not.

Why do good girls fall for the bad guys? Such is the case with gangster Pinkie Brown and Rose, the waitress. Set against the stunning back drop of the pier at the coastal town of Brighton, Pinkie viciously batters a rival gang member. Rose gets to know the truth, but being dim (we suspect), she marries him. This movie is another dark look into the lives of thugs.

Puss in Boots
Remember when Puss in Boots gave Shrek those huge, saucer-like, goo-goo eyes in the second Shrek flick? It was love at first sight for me and I am sure I was not alone!
Now the swash-buckling feline is back and holding his own in a new adventure. He learns that the ‘magic beans’ he has been on the hunt for actually exist but they are in the hands of villains, Jack and Jill. Teaming up with Humpty Alexander Dumpty and a sassy Kitty Softpaws, they high-tail (couldn’t resist that one) through dangers, laughs and escapades you will not easily forget. It is almost as freshly appealing as the first Shrek movie.

Another Earth
Imagine looking up at the sky and you see the earth? It is a mind bending idea and one that is exquisitely crafted in this indie flick. Earth, and the second earth are not in the same universe, yet it has become visible in our skies.
This discovery sets off a chain of events that will forever alter the lives of Rhoda Williams and John Burroughs. Rhoda gets accepted into an astrophysics program and goes out to celebrate, having one too many. Yet she still gets into her car to drive home and hears the news about the second earth. She peers out of her window and crashes into another car – killing a mother, a child and leaving the father (John) in a coma. After her DUI stint in prison, she seeks him out in an attempt to make amends.
Against the backdrop of the second planet, this film demands thoughtful reflection. How would you navigate through life, if you knew there is another you in a different universe?

Real Steel
Real Steel may star His Yumminess himself, Hugh Jackman, but this movie is as washed-up as his character Charlie - a fighter who has lost his chance at a title after 900 kg, 2.5 meter tall steel robots take over the ring.
When it seems Charlie’s life cannot get any worse, he reluctantly teams up with his estranged son, Max, to build and train a championship contender. As the stakes in the no-holds-barred arena are raised, Charlie and Max get one last shot at a comeback.
Not a total waste of your time but I would rather suggest you wait for this one to come out on DVD.

Moneyball
I yawned at the thought of another movie about baseball. Oh, how wrong was I!
Even though baseball is most popular in the USA, this true story about the Oakland Athletics is extremely relatable. Brad Pitt brings his stellar game – no pun intended – as Billy Beane, the general manager of the Oakland A’s. When they lose one of their best batsmen, Beane refuses to wallow. Instead he comes up with creative ways to save costs.
It is always entertaining to see people rise above their challenges and succeed. Watch this for inspiration, if nothing else.

Dream House
Big name stars like Daniel Craig, Rachel Weisz and Naomi Watts give this movie a great footing, so does the great visuals. But where this film falls is through the script that has more pot holes in it than South African roads after the summer rains. The cast do manage to make the convoluted plot believable, though, our biggest gripe is that a major twist is given away in the trailer. Who does that, anyway? Watch it (the trailer) at your peril!

If you have been craving your fix of funny Durban one-liners and Indian quips, your wait is over. The third installment of this side-splitting local movie series is back with a bang and continues to explore the relationships and unexpected happenings in Indian households.

Cool It
The movie focuses on Danish economist, Bjorn Lomborg, the controversial author of “The Skeptical Environmentalist,” who came under fire from the scientific community for his published views on the topic of Global Warming. To sum it up, Lomborg believes the panic surrounding global warming has negatively encouraged countries to budget enormous sums of money to achieve insignificant reductions in temperature.
One thing I really liked about this movie is that instead of using fear, it gives us hope that there are answers out there and that something can be done.

Nick (Will Ferrell) decides to booze it up and camp outside with all his life’s possessions, of course.
Along the way he becomes friends with a lonely boy, reconnects with an old high school mate and builds a relationship with a helpful new neighbour. I am not a Will Ferrell fan, but his portrayal of Nick will leave you thinking “aw…” for days after watching it. All together now: “Aw…”

Straw Dogs
Another week and we have another remake out of Hollywood. This time it is Sam Peckinpah's 1971 Straw Dogs, which starred Dustin Hoffmann and Susan George. Since it is 2011, we have James Marsden playing David, a LA screenwriter and Kate Bosworth plays Amy. They go back to her red-neck home town in Mississippi.
Throw in Amy’s old boyfriend (played by True Blood’s delectable Alexander SkarsgÃ¥rd), tension that turns to horrific violence and a rape scene that made the 1971 movie controversial, and you get a compelling thriller that keeps you watching, and perhaps squirming in your seat too.

Outside the Law
It is a shame that movies like this, which opened up in 2010 in most parts of the world; gets to South African screens only now. Centred on three brothers, torn apart by the expropriation of their father’s ancestral land in Algeria during 1925 by the French, the political tone of this movie is set early on. From Algeria’s struggle for independence, to V.E day during World War II and the nationalist massacre in Setif at the hands of French soldiers, this movie holds its own in the historical drama genre. The performances are astounding, particularly from the brother who becomes a club promoter in Paris.

Mickey Rourke and Stephen Dorff in the same movie? Awesome. I’m in. Mickey plays King Hyperion, who comes to blows with Theseus, chosen by the god Zeus, to bring him down. Also in the mix is Henry Cavill from the Tudors, who plays a brilliant Theseus, along with a gorgeous Isabel Lucas who plays Athena. 50/50
Yes this movie is about a clean-living 27-year-old who discovers he has cancer and, consequently, a 50/50 chance at survival, but it’s not all tears and morbidity. Instead it’s one of those films that’s more about living and dying well.
Played beautifully by one of my favourite actors – Joseph Gordon-Levitt – Adam battles his emotions, his family and his friends while trying to come to terms with his mortality. Flanked by Seth Rogan as his fun-loving friend, as well as Anna Kendrick, this is one of those movies that will have you laughing and crying all at once. Tender and genuine, it’s a winner.

Did some anonymous writer actually pen all of William Shakespeare’s plays, sonnets and poems? If you’re a conspiracy theorist, perhaps. If not, you’re still likely to find the proposition rather interesting.

Tower Heist
This film’s pretty weak storyline is beefed up with a semi-impressive list of actors, which will be the only reason people see it.
Ben Stiller is a concierge at an exclusive apartment building, along with a huge team of other staff, including Casey Affleck and Michael Pena. One of the rich dudes who lives there gets all the staff to invest in a fraudulent pyramid scheme, and he’s taken down by the FBI and placed under house arrest at the apartment. The staff, having been ripped off, are keen to get their money back and since the FBI can’t find the missing $20mill, decide to rob the guy.
Eddie Murphy is the ex-con to help them, which of course throws some humour into the mix, but it’s not enough to completely save this odd script.

Skeem
Although I missed the screening of this local comedy I am super excited to see it.
Here’s the synopsis from the filmmaker: “Set in a partially deserted and rather creepy holiday resort somewhere between Cape Town and Johannesburg, it's a classic caper-film: a mile a minute chase after a cardboard box full of money.
“The film features a cast of colourful characters, all hell-bent on getting their hands on the cash. In the best tradition of a classic French Farce, each character's cunning plan inadvertently thwarts the next.”
A brilliant cast, great script and local setting have already made this film a hit. Support!

In Time
Here’s the premise of this sci-fi flick: It’s the future, and you only get 25 years to live. Instead of money, time is the biggest commodity. In order to live longer you need to work for time. So when a stranger offers Will (Justin Timberlake) immortality, he decides to go for it. The catch is that only a select few can live forever, and the process is policed, so no one is very happy when Will suddenly adds a million years to his ticker. A secret game of cat and mouse follows, of course, along with a kidnapping and some other cool Big Brother-type things. Not bad.

Contagion
We’ve had our fair share of virus outbreak movies, but the genre has been given a shot of adrenalin thanks to director Steven Soderbergh’s hard-hitting doccie-style lens.
You know the story: some super-resistant virus breaks out and the entire world becomes a target, which means panic at the disco. While all around them people are losing their heads, the Centre for Disease Control tries to maintain some sort of calm, but with difficulty.
Starring Matt Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow, Kate Winslet and a host of other great actors, this is the movie you want to watch this weekend.

Colin Farrell as a charming and seductive vampire? Yes, I can see that working, can’t you?
While you may or may not be aware, vampires have been given a 21st Century makeover and are no longer bound to long black cloaks and slicked-back hair. If you have any reverence of South African poetry you’ll know the name Ingrid Jonker.
An incredible woman with foresight beyond her years, she broke boundaries with her words and insights before tragically killing herself in 1965. Nelson Mandela even read one of her poems at the opening of parliament in 1994.

Ceremony
What looks like a whimsical indie movie from the outside is really just a miscellany of better indie movies gone by.
Looking to win back his ex-girlfriend, Zoe (Uma Thurman), Sam ends up gate-crashing her wedding weekend. Of course the man she’s about to marry is a pompous prick, which further fuels his determination.
But we’re talking indie here, so thrown into the fray are a host of supposedly quirky characters and unusual encounters. Unfortunately this is no “Rachel Getting Married,” where humour and tragedy are so perfectly balanced. This comes across as a promising but rather immature attempt. That said, however, I didn’t flat-out hate it.

I’ve said it before: when you see Jason Statham’s name in the credits you know what to expect, and that is some serious ass kicking. I’m not the biggest action fan but I do know that this is not Statham’s best work to date. Nor is it even close to Robert de Niro’s best work. He seems to have fallen into some really bad gangster type movies lately and it’s doing nothing for his reputation (but everything for his pocket, I’m guessing). Nevertheless, I’m sure action junkies will be satisfied to some degree… after all, there is a fair amount of body blows and blood. Isn’t that what it’s all about?

The Three Musketeers
No doubt you’ve seen this movie in one form or another; it’s simply a sexier and more technologically advanced remake of an age-old tale.
This one stars Orlando Bloom, who looks like he could have walked straight off of the Pirates set and onto this one. And for the guys, there’s Milla Jovovich to make the film more interesting. Other than that there’s not much more I can tell you. It’s an adventure romp that will at least keep you entertained for a couple of hours. Sometimes that’s all you need.

Johnny English Reborn
It’s been eight years since Rowan Atkinson played the role of 007 wannabe Johnny English, but as the title suggests, he’s baaaack. For some this might be great cause for celebration, for others the event will pass by unacknowledged. Although I fall into the latter category I do understand (I think) the appeal of watching a half-wit fumble his way through an international conspiracy. For the fans, I hope the eight years has been worth the wait.

The Help
When she returns from college to 1960s Jackson, Mississippi, “Skeeter” finds that she doesn’t fit into the privileged, white upper class as easily as she used to. A journalism graduate, she starts to observe the black “help” employed to raise the white children and maintain a pristine household, and approaches her family servant, Aibileen, to discuss what it feels like, for an article. After some initial resistance, a whole can of worms is opened up, giving Skeeter enough fodder for a novel titled "The Help".
While this film obviously comments on the race relations at the time, it’s also a story about friendships, loss, forgiveness and pride. With outstanding performances from a brilliant ensemble cast, this is the movie to watch in anticipation of next year’s awards season.

Viva Riva!
Like an action movie on steroids, this Congolese offering from first-time director Djo Tunda Wa Munga is a shining light for African film. Highly acclaimed at a series of international film festivals, the crime-action thriller packs a punch that must be a massive eye-opener for Western viewers.
It revolves around a smooth ladies man called Riva, who has stolen a truckload of petrol from a bunch of Angolans. Since Kinshasa is all out of gas, he’s holding on to a small fortune. He’s also in love with a gangster’s woman and is going all out to win her over. All of this amounts to a hell of a lot of angry people, who are now out to find this Riva character – and what a character he is - and show him who's boss.
This is African film at its best, showcasing a raw, pulsing bloodlust, passion, gangsterism and crime, as well as the grittiness of a hustling African city. Kudos!

Warrior
I usually turn my nose up at fight movies. Not because I don’t enjoy them (I actually consider Rocky a classic), but because more often than not they’re badly done with terrible ex-WWE stars and the most pedestrian of scripts. This one ain’t half bad though.
Firstly the fighting in question is called Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), which I can’t say I’m terribly familiar with, so it was pretty interesting if not a bit hair-raising to watch. Secondly the story pits two brothers against each other, and you honestly want both of them to win. Both are in the fight because their screwed-up lives have led them to the point of fighting for money. After establishing both of their histories at the beginning of the movie, you feel connected to both and understand why they’re there. Gripping and intense, this one is worth watching.

What's Your Number?
When Ally (Anna Faris) reads in a magazine that a woman should find her husband within 20 relationships, she starts to panic and promises that she will not go over that number without finding her future “other”.
Instead of going out and looking for a new man, then, she decides to reacquaint herself with all her exes to see if she perhaps missed some husbandly quality in one of them. To help she enlists the services of her neighbour, who just happens to be a hottie, played by Chris Evans. Hmm. Any guesses what happens in the end? Yeah, this isn’t the sharpest of romcoms but it’ll get a few laughs.
